These photos show the adorable and athletic world of dog surfing

Prizes are awarded based on dog size (Small, Medium, Large/XL) as well as other categories including Human/Dog Tandem. A 10-year-old rescue dog named Faith clinched first place in the Large/XL group, while Skyler, an Australian cattle dog, clinched first place as the overall champion in the Top Dog Finals.

Although canine surfing began in the 1920s, it was first recorded around 1932 in the silent film On the waves in Waikiki, in which a man and his terrier named Night Hawk can be seen riding waves together in Hawaii on a wooden surfboard. The World Canine Surfing Championships have been held on the California coast since 2016, and it’s one of many such contests that have been set up around the world.
