BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Let us introduce Millie again. The Bowling Green Fire Department dog and the only ATF accelerator detection dog in the state of Kentucky.
It’s a six-year-old black lab. She was trained by the ATF when she was two…. which is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Millie finds and identifies the accelerators in the fires. It saves time and accuracy in service – and for the past 4 years it has been 100% accurate.
It can be a great way to educate young people in our community.
“We’ll be doing demonstrations with her in schools, we’ve gotten these kids’ attention with this dog and what she can do and how amazing she is, but while we have their attention we’re also posting fire safety messages and tips that they can take home and practice and do,” said handler and investigator Michael Cornwell.
Something about Millie that is different from other dogs is that she is a food reward dog, meaning all food comes from her master’s hand. She is rewarded with food for the work she does.
