Man arrested after dog was thrown off bridge at Spartanburg Co, officials say

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) – Spartanburg County Environmental Law Enforcement said a man is now facing an animal cruelty charge after a dog was thrown from a bridge.

Environmental Enforcement said Oct. 3 that officers responded to a call from someone throwing a dog from a bridge on Highway 11 in the Fingerville area.

After speaking with a witness, authorities found a man holding a dog in a chokehold.

Shanon Lee Cantrell, 43, told authorities she was told by ‘witches’ to throw the dog off a 34ft bridge twice. He mentioned he owned the dog and turned over ownership to the county.

Environmental Enforcement said officials obtained an arrest warrant for Cantrell for violating state law 47-1-40(B) on animal abuse.

Cantrell is currently being held at Spartanburg County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.

Officials said the one-year-old brown and white pitbull-type dog showed no visible signs of injury, but was clearly shaken by the incident. He was taken to Greenville County Animal Care for evaluation.
