Fake animal rescue organization stole dog from Hammond’s house

HAMMOND — MPs say a group of people claiming to be part of an animal rescue group stole a dog from his yard and are asking for the public’s help in bringing him home.

The Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office said a German Shepherd named Smokey was stolen from his home on August 29. Surveillance footage from the home showed two women and a man swapping his leash and the steering wheel.

When a passerby asked what the group was up to, they allegedly said they were part of the “Animal Rescue Group”, which sheriff’s deputies believe is a fake.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on Smokey’s whereabouts to call (985) 345-6150, or if you wish to remain anonymous, please call the Tangipahoa Crime Stoppers Anonymous Tip Line at (1-800) 554-5245.
