Cold snap comes to an end, Dog fans endure football-free weekend – WGAU


Another morning of freezing and near-freezing temperatures in Athens and northeastern Georgia, the first cold snap of the season, then a forecast that includes more seasonal weather over the weekend in most of the state. Athens has seen the coldest weather since April in recent days.

For the first time since Labor Day, we have a football-free weekend for the Georgia Bulldogs: The top-ranked Dogs are using the bye week to prepare for next weekend’s trip to Jacksonville. The Bulldogs will face the Florida Gators a week from tomorrow.

There is an afternoon meeting of the University of Georgia Curriculum Committee. This is a 3.5 hour session at UGA’s Brooks Hall.

There is a resignation in Monroe, where Simoan Baker resigned from his seat on the Walton County School Board. Baker was arrested for theft last August: the GBI says she stole more than $24,000 from a guardianship.

Elberton Police are investigating a recent spate of burglaries and break-ins, at least half a dozen reported at Elberton residences and businesses. A Hartwell woman is in jail in Walhalla, South Carolina: Walhalla police have charged Lakeisha McLendon, 37, with murder in the stabbing death of Terrance Boyd this week. The Hart County woman is being held without bail at the Oconee County Jail in South Carolina.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Buford man: Anthony Mayer, 59, was incarcerated in Hall County Jail for child pornography.
