An autumn tradition: Running with your dog

As the leaves change color and morning temperatures drop, the runners among us recognize the start of a classic fall tradition: racing season. Marathons, triathlons and that all-time favourite: the 5K. All summer, people have been putting on their sneakers and training for first place. For many, going for a run is also a good time to take their dog out. But why stop there? Now it is common to see dogs on the racetrack. Running with your dog just got a whole lot more fun.

Fun races

Last Friday, KY3 reported on a special race in Springfield, Missouri, created especially for dog parents. This weekend, the eighth annual Fast and Furriest 5K saw dogs of all sizes take part in mile races, 5Ks and fun walks. With the mild fall, the dogs and their parents must have had a wonderful morning. Most importantly, event proceeds benefited save one—a Missouri-based nonprofit rescue group.

Nearby Tulsa, Oklahoma, another race was held in the city’s Mohawk Park. Parkside’s By Your Side 5K and one mile run brought together dozens of people and many dogs among them. Notably, the event was also a charity run, raising money for the Parkside Patient Assistance Program, which provides essential services to the community, according to News 9.

For everyone who showed up to support the runners, the race also featured a costume contest, information booths, and even a cutest dog contest.

Run with your dog

If you’re thinking of taking the dog out on your next run, the good news is that it’s a great idea! Just like humans, aerobic exercise is important for your dog’s health. Before hitting the road, however, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, all dogs can go to heaven, but not all dogs are meant to run long distances. some breeds are best suited for running and it is imperative to consider your dog’s age and health.
