ADAMS TOWNSHIP – Paavo is a seven-month-old, mostly white Standard Poodle. He is also the school district’s therapy dog-in-training, serving more than 250 K-12 students in the district.

K-12 art teacher Paige Lewandowski said Paavo has already passed his Canine Good Citizen (AKC) assessment and will take his Pet Partners assessment in the spring when he is old enough (over a year old).

“While he is a wonderful contributor, he also needs lots of grooming, feeding, training (treats and positivity) and toys for mental stimulation,” Lewandowski said on a post. As part of the Donors Choose project, Lewandowski requests materials related to dog food, clothing and hygiene. Donors Choose is one of the most trusted classroom funding sites for teachers.

“The specific project is to continue the sustainability of the school’s therapy dog program at our school and provide Paavo and our students with more tools for his care and well-being,” she said, adding that the toys themselves will provide more opportunities for safe interactions and student well-being.

Paavo has already brought a lot of enrichment to the two classrooms he works in, Lewandowski said. Supplies (clipper guards and hair dryer) will make grooming him every two weeks easier.

Treats will allow for further training and fun interactions. The toys will allow for mental stimulation during downtime and safe play with students.

Finally, she says, the boots will keep him safe through our long, cold winter months when he transitions from high school to elementary school. Having two sizes will give it the ability to become the next pair.

“We’ve started a Donors Choose fundraiser to raise money for some of her needs this fall – grooming supplies, toys, treats, boots, etc.” said Lewandowski. For more information or to donate, please visit the link: and search for Ms. Lewandowski of Jeffers Junior/Senior high.
